Career Ministries

For a number of years now St. Columba’s Church has sent people all over the world on short and long-term missions. We are glad that God continues to call people away from us. In his book ‘The Purpose Driven Church’ Rick Warren says that the mark of a healthy church is not its seating capacity but its sending capacity.

We have been sending people on missions to other parts of the UK and abroad for many years now. In addition, a good number of folk have entered the ordained ministry from our church. We pray for them all on a regular basis, supporting these indigenously-grown missionaries as well as other missionaries God has introduced us to over the years.

We are privileged to be partners for the sake of the Gospel with so many who have heard God’s voice and stepped out in faith and confidence to serve him the world over.

Alli and Jeni were part of the church family at St Columba’s during their time in Aberdeen.  Originally coming to the city to study they met at church and married here in 2003.  Alli then went on to complete his training as a minister in the Church of Scotland and Jeni as a primary school teacher.

In 2007 they accepted a call to St Ninian’s Church of Scotland, Glenrothes.  Alli is working as the parish minister in the fife church and Jeni works in a local school.

David & Maggie Steele and family

David Steele was a divinity student from the Presbyterian Church in Ireland (PCI).  He did a ministerial placement (internship) at St Columba's during the 1990's as part of his ministerial training and he and his wife, Maggie, together with their four children, are now in Malawi where both David and Maggie are in full time Christian service.

Jayne Maccabe

Jayne Maccabe, who worshipped and served at St Columba's whilst a student, has gone on to work with SIM (Serving in Mission), an international, interdenominational, Christian mission agency.

SIM has grown from a few pioneers to hundreds of thousands of people around the world. This is a diverse group of praying people. Some give financially, and some go — more than 1,800 missionaries are making an impact in more than 40 countries in Africa, Asia and South America.

Jayne works with SIM in Glasgow at present.

Cat Derrick

Cat Derrick went down to The Wirral in September 2004 and was a Voluntary Youth Worker with the Village Youth Project which is part of St Mary's Church.

She is now a Youth Development Worker with responsibility for schools work in which she leads RE and PSE lessons and assemblies in Woodchurch High School.

She has had trips to Thailand and the Democratic Republic of Congo to visit projects linked with St Mary's. She also helps out in the "Bank" which is the Youth Centre and enjoys taking dance groups, going rock climbing and taking groups to Outdoor Centres!

Edoh and I spent four weeks in Cameroon typesetting the Ifè New Testament. God answered lots of prayers. The travel went very smoothly and no visa problems! We worked with Steve Pillinger, who came out from England, and made numerous small corrections, finalised the illustrations and maps, the title page, cover and table of contents. Then we signed off: no more corrections allowed! Currently Steve is doing the final layout and will send us files to check by e-mail. We stayed at an SIL centre surrounded by trees and every morning I enjoyed a pre-breakfast birdwatching walk. While there I participated in a module for Consultant-checking Christian material and sat in on the speaker’s sessions at an anthropology symposium – a real bonus. And Edoh brought back a guitar. Back in Togo, I’ve a lot to catch up on and preparations for our Branch retreat in early August.

 GIVE THANKS

l   That the typesetting in Cameroon went very well, as did all the travel and visa arrangements.

PLEASE PRAY

l   For our Branch spiritual retreat followed by Branch conference in August.

  • For the whole team to get some rest and keep in good health.
  • For a resolution to major problems connecting for e-mail

This is a 6-week discipleship course designed to challenge, equip and resource young people as they consider God's call to be
peacemakers in a divided and increasingly multicultural society.

Debs' role is to develop and promote the PYP programme throughout PCI, working alongside churches and youth leaders seeking to run PYP for their young people.

For more information on the PYP programme, check out: www.pciyac.org/resources/pyp.php.
