Christians need to grow closer to God and to one another. Belonging to Jesus means having a very real relationship with him. Like every other relationship, our relationship with him needs to be nurtured and looked after carefully.
As we grow closer to God we begin to love him more and to appreciate more fully how wonderful it is to be his children. Usually this happens when we pray, read the Bible and meet regularly with other Christians. When we grow closer to other Believers, we learn to support each other better. We become more able to encourage one another to follow Jesus more faithfully and obediently.
House Groups are very important to us in St. Columba’s Church because they help us to grow closer to God and to one another. House groups help us to deepen our relationships with God and with other Christians in our church.
Each mid-week, many of the people who come along to St Columba’s Church on Sundays also meet each other in groups of 8-12, in homes. We read the Bible together, discuss its meaning, pray for one another, and encourage each other. Then we have coffee and biscuits, hopefully chocolate ones! We usually meet in the evenings, but our hope is that more and more house groups will meet during the day, especially so that older members of our church will feel confident about coming along.
Our vision for house groups is to see each group inviting newcomers along, and growing to the point where a new group needs to be formed. It’s an exciting vision, and we would like you to come and be part of it.
Who goes to a house group? Well, ordinary people like you and me. There are no theology professors in our house groups, at least not the last time we looked, but even theology professors need the encouragement of other Christians! Our house groups are simply for anyone who wants to know more about Jesus, and would like to understand the Bible better.
If you came to one of our house groups you would find people just like you, people who want to explore the Christian faith a little more. You will also find friends who will be happy to accept and welcome you. You won’t be asked to do anything you don’t want to do. After all, it’s meant to be fun, and we want you to come back!
