Girls Brigade News

Girls Brigade is back after the October holidays and we are busily taking part in the divisional challenge. We have had to do a variety of tasks from working out the total height of the company, the total ages of the officers – (not telling anyone that number, but the average age is 43!), learning the books of the New Testament by heart and helping lead a service at church –which we’re looking forward to on Sunday 19th November. We are also attending the annual remembrance service on the 9th November, so the company will be very visible to the congregation over the next few weeks.

4 girls took part in a national Scottish competition in Balerno in Edinburgh on a very rainy Saturday in October and although they didn’t win, they did very well. They also enjoyed meeting girls from all over Scotland – so well done Melissa, Morgan, Bethany and Lauren

We are taking part in the divisional sports afternoon at the end of November in Newtonhill and will be carol singing for the residents in Fairview at Christmas time, as well as taking part in a divisional carol service and a carol service at St.Columba’s with the Boy’s Brigade on Fri 19th Dec, so it is a busy time for us all in the run up to Christmas! We ask for your prayers for the girls and officers – and we would welcome any new girls who would like to join us on Wednesday evenings

The Girls’ Brigade is a uniformed Christian organisation for girls of school age, and our Company is part of the international and inter-denominational Girl’s Brigade Organisation.

Our motto is to “Seek, Serve and Follow Christ” and through a varied programme of activities that’s just what we try to help girls to do! Our programme is based round four main areas – Spiritual, Educational, Physical and Service.

This year our programme is based round the theme of animals, with activities like songs, games, craft work, stories, dance routines and quizzes, as well as entering competitions with other companies from the Aberdeen Division of the organisation.

Our evenings are busy and fun and we welcome new members at any time of the school year. Older girls can take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s award scheme and there is also a structured leadership programme for this age group.

The girls meet in the following sections:
Explorers (Primary 1 –3) 6.30 – 7.30
Juniors (Primary 4 –7) 7.15 – 8.30
Brigaders (S 1 – 6) 7.15 – 9.00

Our officers are Christian women who are trained to lead the girls in all aspects of this work. If you think you would enjoy working with girls in this organisation please speak to Mrs Merlyn Hendry, our Captain about this – we always welcome new helpers or officers – experienced or not!
